This utility box stands at the beginning of Hardy Street, the entrance to the city centre. Because it is an important gateway, Satomi Ballantyne wanted to create a design that wishes good luck for everyone who lives, works, and visits Nelson.
The design includes traditional Japanese symbols of good fortune. The plum blossoms represent hope and new beginnings. The waves stand for strength and a bright future. The golden clouds bring a feeling of celebration and happiness. The crane and turtle are well-known Japanese symbols of long life, peace, and good luck.
I moved to Nelson in 2017, and my son was born here. Nelson has become my family’s home, and this artwork is my wish that the city continues to grow with happiness, good fortune, and a strong community.
Special thanks to Lloyd Harwood for helping with the painting of Satomi’s artwork.
ArtBoxes is a joint project with Arts Council Nelson.
Huge thanks to NEL (Nelson Electricity Limited) for supporting our artists to transform their boxes!
