My Fancy Car is a community-inspired mural celebrating imagination, play, and the joy of childhood. Designed with young people and for the whole community, the artwork reflects ideas of movement, creativity, and fun, bringing colour and energy to this shared space.
Once again Make/Shift Spaces has teamed up with Arts Council Nelson with a brilliant idea to add more colour to out city streets. In early 2026 we put the call out for budding artist to draw their inspirations for a really fancy car.
We asked kids up to 12years to create an image of what their fancy car would look like – a hot tub on the roof? Liquorice tyres? A car that shoots out sunflower seeds? An inbuilt toilet?!
And of course, we got some cracker entries! These were then whittled down to four finalists, whose work now features on a power station box on the corner of Hardy and Kerr St.
Congratulations to the artists whose work was selected: William Adie, Asher Eathorne, Flora Wonford, Pippa Amadeo and Elsie Gale.
Our very special thanks go to the all the children who shared their great artworks with us for this project: Hannah Fitzgerald, Soul Karki, Maya Clarke, Zoe Clarke, Emil Pokel, Jranie Hicks, Toa Macleod, Hudson, Lily, Hazel, Layne Collins, Grace, Toby, Sofia, Tereza, Louis, Lucas, Mason, Blake Shuttleworth, Louie Lynch, Jayden Longman and Greta Buwell.
My Fancy Car is a joint project between Arts Council Nelson and Make/Shift Spaces. We’d like to thank Bowater Motor Group as the main sponsor and to the Nelson City Creative Communities Scheme and Network Tasman for their support.
