A celebration of mask making in Whakatū Nelson

Celebrating mask culture and creating your own are a huge part of cultural celebrations all around the world and have been a wonderful part of Nelson Arts Festival since its inception in 1995.

The 2022 Festival is paying homage to this magical legacy with an exhibition of masks and photos throughout the CBD – a mix of new creations by the community and favourites from past years’ parades.

A colourful celebration of our community, its diversity and joyful creativity!

Nelson Arts Festival approached Make/Shift Spaces about securing the sites and creating the displays – we’re very happy to be working with the Festival again!

During the Festival, the photos were in three places – Bank Lane, 226 Trafalgar Street (both next to BNZ), and 83-87 Bridge Street (ex-Warehouse Stationery). The displays on the first two sites are still there – have a look!

Huge appreciation to photographer Steve Hussey for the photos on display.

Nelson Arts Festival acknowledges the generous support of Speedy Signs Nelson, Pascoe Properties and Maylark Holdings.
