It all came together in a rush, when Chloe Loftus needed a rehearsal space for her performance work, The Gathering Tide, to be performed as part of Nelson Arts Festival.

The Gathering Tide – a sunset event of collective joy.

Tāhunanui Beach becomes the stage as internationally acclaimed local artist Chloe Loftus brings the community of Whakatū together in a bold, large-scale celebration of place and belonging.

Featuring local people at the heart of the work, this immersive sunset experience transforms the shoreline into a living expression of community, belonging and collective joy. As dusk falls, audiences are invited on a cinematic journey that celebrates this iconic landscape, of which we individually and collectively share such deep resonance.

Through movement, music and a sense of ritual, everyday locals emerge across the beach and come together in a powerful shared moment. The experience culminates with an invitation to a collective swim, a beach fire and dance party beneath the night sky, featuring DJ Alvaro Saura Moreno.

We’re looking for individuals, friends, whānau, workplaces and community groups to take part – and no dance or performance experience is needed.

Recommended for participants aged 16yrs and older, there will be simple, fun and accessible rehearsals, and options for level of commitment.  You’ll become part of an unforgettable sunset performance on Tāhunanui Beach this October as part of Nelson Arts Festival and The Gathering Tide’s world premiere.
