Monsters from an inner landscape symbolising fears and anxieties live in this dreamland were they are no longer scary.
Alicia Rocha is a self-taught artist from Mexico, who came to Nelson nearly eight years ago.
Alicia started making art as part of her recovery from a terrible concussion. She started going to Magenta Creative Space where she painted Dreamland, which is her first mural. You can also see Alicia’s work on an NEL box in New Street – Mi amigo Axolotl – and a commissioned mural for Rainbow Kitchen on Hardy Street.
Alicia is a psychologist, currently working with Cultural Conversations and with the Nelson Women’s Centre as an external specialised service offering affordable therapy for the migrant/Latin community.
Huge love to Magenta Creative Space – it’s well worth dropping in to see what they do. Magenta is Nelson’s only free, drop-in, fully resourced arts studio for people with lived experience of mental distress, no referral is required.
Many people have found their involvement in Magenta is key to their improved wellbeing. Magenta has a philosophy of inclusion and connection.
