About CAN

Community Action Nelson (CAN) was established by a group of women with many years of experience in Nelson’s social service not-for-profit sector. Determined to see social equity in Aotearoa-NZ, they identify emerging and major social issues in Nelson, with a major focus on affordable housing. CAN has strong links to Victory Community Centre, Nelson Women’s Centre, the community sector’s Community and Whānau Network and many other not-for-profit organisations.

Housing in Nelson at Make/Shift Spaces

CAN’s Make/Shift Space provided an informative, fun, interactive experience for the public that showcased various housing options for inner city dwellings.  They held weekly lunch-time sessions with presentations, TED talks, and Conversation Cafes, as well as creative drawing and model-making space for children and adults, slide shows, and 3D visual displays from local designers and architects. The Make/Shift Space provided a temporary inner-city headquarters which increased public engagement and awareness of Nelson’s social issues, and enhanced education and advocacy of CAN’s kaupapa.
