What can we do as an innercity business?

In the 2025 Spring Clean, we had a number of businesses and organisations step up and do great things!

There’s some examples below of what’s already happening this year:

  • The Angel Gardeners have been out and about, tidying the big planter pots at the Bus Terminus, and along Bridge St (it was the Angels who did the planting last year, and it’s lovely to see how everything has grown).
  • ArtWalk will be getting an ArtWash! After more than five years since the 27 works were installed, they need a bit of a clean – this will begin on Fri 19 September.
  • We’ve got businesses along Vanguard St pledging to upgrade their gardens.
  • CLM at Trafalgar Centre have pledged to do a general tidy-up of hte grounds and along their patch of the Maitai River.
  • There’s a group getting together to have a working bee at Pioneer Park – picking up rubbish, tending to the gardens and removing graffiti.

And here’s a few things that happened in 2024 – just for inspiration:

  • ArtHouse on Bridge St (ArtHouse Architects, Make/Shift HQ, Anne Rush Art and others), went all out and decided they wanted a mural on their roller-door. But before artist Richard Sellars could do his thing, they gave the laneway a jolly good clean – getting rid of the rubbish and weeds, and cleaning away the grime. It was very satisfying, especially now that they have their own artwork to share with everyone.
  • Shine Design Store and Craig Potten Gallery got together and water-blasted the footpath outside their frontages, and gave a general spruce up to the overall appearance.
  • Boffa Miskell in Nelson decided to take on a neglected pocket park in Buxton Square. Within an hour they’d removed all the rubbish, trimmed the grass and planted perennials around the tree and along the edges. Read about here in the Nelson Mail.
  • Over at Nikau Hauora Hub in Selwyn Place, they got out the paintbrushes and gave their outdoor table a makeover, as well as replanting their courtyard garden. Matty Anderson got stuck into refreshing the garden by the front door. Stay tuned for what they’re planning for 2025!
  • Along Halifax Street, RMM Landscape Architects pitched in and replanted the garden on Halifax St, by the old petrol station. A couple of months later, the patch was blooming with edibles!
