Think of the city as a an outdoor art gallery, with heaps of potential for artworks on every scale. Make/Shift Spaces is a non-for-profit organisation that has an ever-growing network of Nelson/Tasman artists. Your financial contribution will help make our city vibrate with original artworks and creativity.
In 2024, NEL cleaned up some of their metal boxes around town, and then came to Make/Shift Spaces to find some artists.
So great! These mini-murals are perfect for less experienced artists who are young and keen and do a fantastic job. Take a look at the bright and cheerful works done by David George Garcia, Rachel Promthat and Emily Narby. And then we’ve also used more experienced artists like Alicia Rocha, Amy Adams and Karolina Serrano. It all depends on each individual project.
Art in public places provides a wide range of benefits including making our fabulous city even more unique. It encourages people to linger, and then what happens? They need a coffee, or they spot an irresistible pair of shoes in a shop window, they tell their friends about this cool new mural, and before you know it, the city becomes a more welcoming place to be. Basically, art makes everything better.
As a guide:
$100 will go towards a general fund to support Make/Shift Spaces’ city revitalisation initiatives.
$600 -$1000 will pay an artist to paint an art box or mini-mural (like the NEL ones). Size dependant. You’ll be named as a donor on the website.
A great example is the one outside Quin Dental – they now have their little axolotyl to greet them everyday!
$1000 will cover the costs of an ArtDoor (artist fee, printing and installation). You’ll be thanked on our website.
$5000 will go a long way to producing a major artwork on a city wall. You’ll be thanks as a donor on our website.
