This was a picture shot a few years ago for a magazine piece about one of Ngāti Koata’s korowai. Although the cloak is beautiful in its entirety, I liked the drama of zooming in tightly on the richly-coloured feathers.

Tim Cuff established himself in the UK as a freelance photographer for daily national newspapers including The Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, the Independent and the Guardian, shooting everything from hard news to feature pictures.

These days he’s the regular photographer for news events in the top of the South for The New Zealand Herald, but he’s equally recognised for his creative magazine work with titles such as North & South, AA DirectionsKia Ora magazine and New Zealand Geographic, for which he’s won awards along the way.

In 2024 he became one of the select group of drone photographers of Amazing Aerial, the foremost aerial image library, supplying photos and videos to some of the world’s top publications and broadcasters. Corporate clients relying on him for innovative and eye-catching content include Sealord, Consumer NZ, Port Nelson and Nelson City Council.

Tim is also the main photographer for Make/Shift Spaces – we love his photos!
