Tata Beach is our favourite place for swimming and snorkelling. We launch our kayaks here and explore the steep, limestone cliffs of the Tata Islands or paddle to Wainui Bay or Taupo Point. The sunsets are unbelievable. Early morning beach walkers describe an interesting natural phenomenon of hundreds of shags lining up along shoreline. It was first thought that they were in conference, planning the day’s fishing activities, but ornithologists have concluded they are regurgitating crop stones and replacing them.

This is a warm painting, you can almost feel the summer heat rising up from the granite sand.

The original artwork for Tata Beach is oil a private collection, but it is available as a print – click here for more details.

Landscape painter Peter Geen was born in Nelson, describing himself as a ‘self-taught painter who has experienced the influence and mentoring from a number of acclaimed New Zealand artists’. This includes the well-respected Ian Scott, who was Peter’s art teacher at Nelson College, and once commented that ‘Peter has a flawless sense of tonal values’.

In the early 2000s Peter’s work changed markedly with his move from oils to acrylic paint. This allowed him to refine his work and increase the level of detailing in his landscapes. His paintings are often described as three-dimensional and he is celebrated as a ‘master of detail and light’. This detailed style of painting is very time-consuming with many hours of studio-based work going into each painting.

From 2003-23, Peter and his wife Kerry ran EarthSea Gallery in Golden Bay. Peter has exhibited in Australia and New Zealand and his paintings have been purchased by private collectors throughout NZ, and around the world. His original paintings and fine art reproductions are available to purchase from his website.
